ABOUT GERRIT LOUW INDUSTRIAL PSYCHOLOGIST

You still care about your work. You want enough of yourself left for the rest of your life.

I’m Gerrit, an Industrial Psychologist, business owner and father. I work with professionals, leaders and business owners who are carrying significant responsibility and questioning whether the way they are working is still sustainable.

Together, we examine what is creating the pressure, what may be keeping it in place and where change is possible.

GERRIT LOUWPsychology for the way work meets real life.

01 Work follows you home, even when you’re physically there.

02 Decisions keep finding their way back to you.

03 You keep waiting for the next busy period to end.

THE PERSONAL STORY

Our lives had changed. The way we worked hadn’t.

The experience that changed how I understand success, responsibility and the conditions of work.

Early in my career I started a consulting practice working with major corporate clients. My wife was building a bakery. We were ambitious, busy and preparing to become parents.

Then our daughter arrived, and she struggled with colic.

Sleep became scarce. Both businesses still needed us. We told ourselves that once we got through the difficult period, things would go back to normal.

They didn’t. The exhaustion accumulated. Our relationship came under strain. Work became harder to manage. Even after the colic eased, we still felt depleted and isolated.

We were trying to meet a changed life with the same routines, expectations and ways of working.

WHAT CHANGED

We changed what an ordinary day asked of us.

  1. 01

Client consultations moved to after 10 a.m.

  2. 02

I moved more of my practice online and delegated more.

  3. 03

We protected ten minutes to listen to one another.

With a cup of tea beside my wife and our daughter playing outside at sunset, I realised how much I had missed being present enough to enjoy an ordinary moment.

My ambition still mattered. My way of working had to change.

THE QUESTION THAT FOLLOWS

“I know I can’t keep doing everything the way I used to. But what do I change when my responsibilities haven’t gone away?”

That was the difficult part. Our daughter still needed us. Business still needed to run. The responsibilities were real.

But I began to realise that not every demand was fixed in the same way.

Some things I could change myself.

Like when I scheduled consultations or how I handled routine administration.

Some I could influence.

Like how responsibilities and decisions were shared with the people around me.

Some I needed to negotiate.

Like commitments, meeting times or expectations that involved other people.

And some I simply had to work within.

Because our daughter still needed care, and certain responsibilities could not just disappear.

The point wasn’t that everything was flexible. It was that not everything was fixed in the same way.

That distinction still shapes how I work with clients.

Before deciding what to change, we look at what is creating the pressure, what is keeping it in place and where there may still be room to act.

HOW I WORK

Before we change anything, we find out what is actually going on.

The same difficulty can arise for very different reasons. Often, several factors are happening at once.

IMAGINE YOU TELL ME

“I can’t switch off from work.”

I could suggest better boundaries. But first, I would want to know what keeps pulling you back.

FOUR POSSIBILITIES WORTH EXPLORING

01 / DEMANDSIs there simply too much work?
02 / OWNERSHIPAre decisions and responsibilities unclear?
03 / EXPECTATIONSDoes being dependable mean always being available?
04 / LIFE AROUND WORKHave your circumstances changed while work hasn’t?

Different explanations may call for different responses. My job is to help you make the useful distinction before choosing a next step.

This is the kind of exploration we can begin in a private first session. See how the session works

YOUR FIRST SESSION

You don’t need to have the problem figured out before we talk.

Your 60 minutes are dedicated to the situation you’re facing. Together, we’ll explore what’s happening, what may be keeping it in place, and what you can do next.

You’ll leave with a clearer perspective, whether or not you decide to continue working with me.

  1. 01

    What needs attention?

We name the pressure, challenge or decision and what you want to be different.

  2. 02

What may be keeping it in place?

We examine demands, expectations, behaviours and working arrangements, and what remains uncertain.

  3. 03

    What’s a useful next step?

We identify an action, decision or question worth investigating further.

GOOD TO KNOW

A few questions before you book.

Is this therapy?

No. This offer is professional coaching and advisory work. It is not psychotherapy, crisis care or a substitute for medical or mental health treatment. Where a different form of support is needed, that distinction will be discussed.

Will our conversation be confidential?

Information is handled under applicable professional confidentiality and privacy obligations, including their legal limits. Consent and privacy arrangements will be explained before the session.

Do I need to prepare?

Bring one real situation you would like to explore. Any required intake or preparation steps will be explained before the appointment.

What if I want to continue?

If further coaching or advisory work would be useful, we can agree a focus, scope and fees. The initial session does not commit you to more sessions.

YOUR NEXT STEP

Something needs to change. We can start by finding out what.

Bring one real pressure, decision or work challenge to a private 60-minute consultation. We’ll explore what may be keeping it in place and identify a practical next step or an important question to investigate.
